Evaluation: Answer to 7 questions

In what ways will your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
žI plan that the outcome of my magazine will relate to existing magazines such as Natty Dread and Reggae United. The representations will be use conventions such as the styles, range of colours and ways in which they captivate their audience.

žAs there are not many magazines targeted for people who like reggae music, this magazine will attract a wide audience because it is a unique type of magazine.
How will your media product represent particular social groups?
žI plan that my magazine will represent both male and females who enjoy listening to reggae music.
žI want the representations in my magazine to be positive unlike many representations of Caribbean reggae artists of today.
žThis magazine will show that Caribbean artists can achieve something in life and that they use this to reflect on others around them.
žIt will also give Caribbean people a sense of belonging because they have something that is related to their culture.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
žAs I am using Natty  Dread and Reggae United magazine for inspiration I have looked into what media institution publishes them, GMaG. As my magazine will have many similar conventions of these magazines I am pretty confident that GMaG will be interested in distributing my magazine. Also, this company deals with black entertainment so they would know how to distribute it to the right kind of target audience.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

žMy new music magazine will be aimed at Caribbean people who like to listen to reggae music aged 4o and over. However, this magazine will not discouraged any others who may feel they are interested in it. This that if any other person would like to buy this magazine, they are free to.

How will I attract or address my audience?
žI will attract my audience visually by using bright colours that relate to the Caribbean such as red, gold and green.
žI will also make sure that colours are consistent throughout my magazine.
žOn my front cover I will have a strong, eye catching picture of my artist.
žOn the contents page I will keep the writing as simple as I can and use one image so that I keep the readers engaging and also in suspense.
žOn my feature page I will include more than one picture so that the readers don’t just see the text.
žAfter doing all this, I am sure that my target audience will be attracted to this magazine and it will appeal to them because it will be something that they can relate to.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of construction this product?
When starting AS Media I had some knowledge and experience with the program Photoshop as I used it a few times at my secondary school, but this was very limited because we only used it for a couple of hours. However, I had never worked on producing a magazine before. I have learnt it takes a great deal of skill, time and effort to create a magazine that could potentially be successful.
I had no experience with using InDesign and I believe that my skills have developed a substantial amount since the preliminary task. I learnt how to use the different layers to add text, images and different gradients in order to produce good quality in my magazine. Below are 3 of the stes that I had to take while creating my magazine using InDesign.

I have found Photoshop very useful when editing my photos. Even though I didn’t change my photos too much, I still learnt how to change the brightness, the gradient and remove the background of my photos and manipulating them. Also, I learnt that I didn't need to hange my photos dramtially in order for them to look good.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I think that I have improved quite a lot since I started the preliminary task. I have developed my skills using PhotoShop and InDesign.
I have also learnt that to make the photos look more effective, I had to change the way that they look. This can change the way that the audience looks at the photo .
In the production of the magazine, from the preliminary task, I have learnt to colour coordinate more  so that the magazine looks more attractive to my audience. Colour coordination makes my front cover look more appealing and eye catching. This technique also made my front cover, contents page and double page spread look more professional.
Although I only used a limited amount of tools on the programs, I learnt how to use them effectively. I showed that I didn't need to use all the tools to create an effective photo.

Audience Feedback: 7th April 2011

 Audience Feedback for Front Cover
There was a mixture of feedback that I received for my magazine.
For the front cover, it was said that the central image drew them to the magazine and caught their attention really quickly.
The colour scheme that was used was said to be very effective because of the way that it represents the Caribbean. The font was clear to read.
The way that the photo was taken seemed to catch their eye also. I was said that the way in which it seems as though the photo has been taken a long time ago because of the effect that was placed on it.
However, it was said that the masthead could have been a little bit bigger so that it jumped off the page more.
The colour of the clothes that the cover artist was wearing could have been a little bit brighter so that it contrasted better with the text.

Audience Feedback for Contents Page
For the contents page was said that the way that the features were laid out was different from what was normally seen.
The way that the background was set out seemed to have attracted the readers as effectively as I wanted it to. They said that the way that the red, yellow and green integrate with each other caught their attention the most.
They liked the way that the question that was asked related directly to the front page.
One improvement that was suggested was that there could have been maybe one more photo to fill the page. They said that this would have given them more of a reason to read the magazine.
Another criticism was that there could have been a few more pages that could have been added to keep them interested.

Audience Feedack for Double Page Spread
For the double page spread, it was said that they liked the
way that the colour scheme was kept up throughout the magazine. They said that if it was a different colour from the contents page, it wouldn’t have worked as effectively.
The image of the cover star and a young boy and  his daughter seemed to appeal to the audience as they said that it portrayed something different.
They liked the image of the man cover star but thought that it could have been a little bigger to show that it was the main feature in the article.

Main Task: Reggae Music Magazine Double Page Spread Redraft 24th-25th Mar

For this photo that I have decided to use, I have set up the room so it looks as though the singer is doing a performance. The use of the cream background shows that the singer is an innocent person and the way that the lighting is done behind her brightens up the room a little bit. If the background light was not there, it would make the room look too dark and the singer would not be able to be seen as effectivly as it does now.
I took this image myself but I have taken it from a performance that I put on YouTube. I done this by recording myself singing and then uploading it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgn4UEpcm3M
I print screened it so I could get the picture from it. I have used this photo for one of my double page spread pictures because I wanted it to show the main cover artist.
I have used this photo because I wanted to show what the cover artist looked like when he was younger. In the article, it explains that he gave up music to look after his children. so I have used this photo to portray that.

This is my final drafty of the double page spread. I have kept the colour scheme going throughout the whole magazine. I have chosen to use more than one photo because I think that there should be more than one within the spread as I have only used one for the front cover and contents page. the interview is not too long and wordy because I wanted to keep the readers engaged not bored. the main thing that i changed was the colour of the background. this was because I wanted it to contrast well with the contents page.

Main Task: Reggae Music Magazine Redrafted Contents Page 17th-18th Mar

For the background, I have used a red, yellow and green gradient that I believe contrasts with the magazine theme. This is the main feature of the contents page that i have changed for the magazine. I thought that the white background was too plain. I will continue this colour scheme for the double page spread.
I believe that this is very effective because it stands out a lot and I think that this will catch the readers eyes. The image of the cover star is also there because I want to keep the readers guessing. Also, I believe that the features are the most important aspect of the contents page which is why I have only used one photo. I have also tried to keep the font of the text similar or the same so that the theme flows all throughout the magazine.

Main Task: Reggae Music Magazine Redraft 11th-12th Mar.

Today is the day that the magazine redraft is due. I have decided that I will keep the background white because it represents Jonny Roots as being pure and innocent in the 80's. however, I have used photoshop and kept the speakers in the background so that there is evidence that the artist is in a music based area. When it comes to the double page spread, the background will be different. I will do this by taking a picture with a more dynamic background to show the maturity of the aritists coming back into music.

Main Task: Reggae Magazine Double Page Spread 17th-18th Feb

I have completed the text for my double page spread. Before I typed the text, I made sure that I wrote the text out so I had an idea of what I would be writing. I don't think that my main image is very good. The reason for this is because I believe that it could have been a more high in terms of the quality of the image. When I begin to redo this, I will make sure that I an appropriate picture for the double page spread.

Main Task: Reggae Magazine Double Page Spread 10th-11th Feb

Before I can start my double page spread, I need to find out information of the cover artist so that I can add it to the spread. Over the weekend I will make sure that I take a few more pictures of my cover artist to try and decide the type of picture that I want to use.
I will try and attract and address my audience by portraying photos of the cover artist and try to create nostalgia for the audience so that they can relate to the magazine. I will do this by including old photos of the cover artists most famous moments that the audience will remember.
I am designing my double page spread to represent mostly people who are interested into the old school Jamaican reggae artists.
I have started to add the interview of the main cover image before I decide on what type of picture I want for the spread. I will need to do some more research on the way that photos are taken so that I can apply it to my own one. I will take a photo of the main cover star while they are wearing either red, yellow or green clothing so that it contrasts with the questions in the interviews. I have made sure that the theme of red, gold and green has continued throughout the process of creating affect for the front cover, contents page and the double page spread.

Main Task: Reggae Magazine Double Page Spread 3rd-4th Feb

Today I start my double page spread. First, I will research different examples so that I have a clear idea on how I can base my one on. Then I will add the text to the spread doing the images last as I have not decided what type of images I want for the it. I will try to get pictures that is good quality and is worthy of being a double page spread images. I want the images to look unique. I will use more than one image because I want the spread to look as if I have taken pictures from Jonny Roots' past and present.
These are a few examples that I have looked at so that I have an idea as to what my double page spread will look like. These images are from http://www.google.co.uk/images?um=1&hl=en&biw=974&bih=469&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=double+spread+page+magazine&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

Example 1

With this example, only one side of the spread has been filled with text which shows that the pages doesn't have to full up both of the pages. The bold text contrasts with the colours that the Black Eyed Peas are wearing. I have to make sure that I try to mirror this for mine because I want the spread to look affective and appeal to the audience and draw them in to buy the magazine when they look in it.

Example 2

This example is quite similar to Example 1. The similarities are that there is only one main image for this spread. This shows that I don't necessarily need to to add more than one photo to my spread but to make it look a little to bit different to other magazines, I will add a few photos. I will also place the text on both sides of the spread although these two examples show that text needs to be on one side.
